More electricity is consumed daily in the US than in any other nation worldwide. And with all the issues Earth is confronting right now with pollution and ozone layer depletion, we should help save power, which in turn will assist Earth.
I made a trip to California recently and stayed at one of the top Carmel hotels. While there I read an article about one of the Carmel inns that had implemented some new ways to conserve energy. I thought it might be great to share in this article some of the things I learned. Today, we will address just a few things you can do to help conserve energy and also save some money daily. These are really easy things that anyone can do, we simply have to make the choice to do them in order to help planet Earth and ourselves.
The first thing you can do is to just switch off the lights each time you leave the room. Most of us probably temporarily leave the living room lights on when we run to the kitchen to get food because we think we are going to return right away. If you do this even twice each day, that is more or less 30 minutes of consumed electricity for merely this one light. While 30 minutes doesn’t seem like much, remember that millions upon millions of people do this everyday. If you total the minutes for the year, that would be more or less 182 hours of power just for one light in one room for each soul that does this. Then try multiplying that by just 1 million souls. The amount comes to an astounding 182 million hours of squandered electricity that is essentially coming from one single room in every individual’s household.
One other wasteful habit that many people do is turn the lights on when going inside a room. This has become second nature to numerous people. I know I do this quite a bit often. The trouble is that even during the day when you don’t need the light since you’re getting more than enough sunlight to light up the room. Still, many of us still come into a room and switch the lights on. And the awful part is since there is daylight, you may exit the room and leave the lights switched the entire day as since you don’t even realize it’s on. You must make a deliberate effort to leave the lights switched off if there is sufficient natural light in a room.
Another serious problem is people leaving things like TVs and radios switched on the entire day even if they are not in the same room. I holler at my mother each time I come visit and she has her television on but isn’t even watching it. Just imagine the amount of electrical energy being consumed. If you are not going to be in the room anymore and the television is turned on, flip it off.
These are only a couple of things that people can do very easily but can have a big impact on our attempts to save power and to save the Earth. It simply takes a little effort on your part to remember these things, and when each person makes a little effort, it can add up to make a huge difference.
