How difficult it is for me to find local food in supermarkets, such as milk, cereals, olive oil, dressings, bottle of water, orange juice, etc. I can see that most of the food I ate was coming from another state, or even foreign countries. What a waste in transportation and packaging! After 9 days we start feeling the difference in our plate: local and seasonal veggies and fruits, grass-fed meat, local eggs, etc.
The whole way of cooking and eating is becoming different. It’s a real day to day challenge! No more bananas and mangoes for me! I never realized the logistic behind the food supply until now. Being a big cheese and bread eater, I’m actually changing my way of eating. Going to farmers markets is not all about the food; it’s also about socializing with local farmers that I never met before. Our region is well-known for avocado, orange and strawberries; let’s get the best of it!
My new task is to try to grow my own veggies on my patio. I kept some seeds this weekend and just planted it. I will see if I can get some bell peppers and green beans out of the earth! If it works, I’ll get some salad, strawberries and tomatoes and see what happens. I just hope the insects and birds won’t get it before me while I’m working!
To be continued…
