Sierra Natural Cleaners specializes in environmentally-friendly, non-toxic cleaners for use in both commercial businesses and homes. Marie-Angele Wilkinson, President of Sierra Natural Cleaners, passion for environmentally-friendly cleaning products began after spending over 20 years in the hotel industry. Thus creating a “vision is to eliminate toxic and hazardous chemicals and force–through customer demand–chemical companies to come up with greener alternatives”
“In 1999, I formed an Environmental Impact Committee for the chain I was working with to seek ways to help our hotels be more sustainable,” she explained. “The idea was shelved, but for me, it launched a new career.”
Sierra Natural Cleaners began as Sierra Environmental Technologies, where Wilkinson worked for five years to learn about chemicals and their environmental and health impacts. Wilkinson took over the company in 2008, and she now runs it alongside her husband, Mark.
Membership in the Green Chamber was a natural fit for Sierra Natural Cleaners. “I finally feel ‘plugged in’ to an organization that has the wherewithal to get things done by standing up for the green movement and pulling together a community of businesses,” Wilkinson said. “Educating other businesses and our city representatives is so important, and I see the U.S. Green Chamber taking over that leadership role.”
In order to maintain sustainability, Sierra Natural Cleaners collects used gallons and quart bottles from their customers for re-use. They also recycle paper and plastic and use recycled paper for business cards and other paper needs.
“We practice ‘environmentally preferable purchasing’ and buy from like-minded businesses, aligning ourselves with manufacturers who share our vision,” Wilkinson added.
Additionally, their chemical manufacturer users recycled plastic, paper, and soy ink on the bottle’s labels.
“In the 10+ years we have been in business, we estimate that we have eliminated over 300,000 pounds of toxic and hazardous chemicals,” she said. “We truly view our customers as our ‘partners for the environment,’ as we are all working together for the health of our planet.”
