San Diego CA, July 28, 2011 – The U.S. Green Chamber of Commerce (USGCC), a national nonprofit organization that empowers businesses to achieve economic, environmental, and social sustainability, is calling on Washington to put aside pre-election posturing and realize that a far more damaging crisis is just around the corner, should the government default on its debt on August 2.
With businesses still rebuilding in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, this latest impasse from our nation’s lawmakers may signal the end of many small to medium enterprises nationwide, the organization urges.
USGCC CEO David Steel was quick to jump to the defense of his organization’s membership by calling for an agreement to be made on the debt ceiling debacle as a matter of urgency.
“Playing politics with our nation’s finances is a dangerous practice, with the potential to shatter consumer confidence and place the futures of many small businesses at severe risk,” he said.
“The ramifications of the U.S. defaulting on its debt will lead to increased interest rates and borrowing costs which many businesses can ill afford in the recovery phase of the current economic cycle. Shop doors will close, and people will be out of jobs – is this any way to treat the engine room of our economy?” Steel asked.
The USGCC is also calling for any possible cuts to pre-existing environmental and renewable energy funding to be taken off the table in the bid to reach consensus.
“One way to grow the economy is to help create new jobs in new industries. Our ‘green economy’ is already playing catch up to other industrialized nations, and any move backwards in this regard is unacceptable. It’s time we provided certainty in the sector to attract investment in new infrastructure and drive important energy reform,” Steel said.
“Protecting jobs and creating jobs are part of the nation’s DNA, so we implore those that were elected by the people to listen to the people and finalize a deal now.”
