Take a post war building in the South Beach historic art deco district and completely renovate the Clifton Hotel’s 35- room interior to earth friendly materials and as a result the first LEED certified building in the city of Miami Beach, is born.
After its multi-million dollar renovation the Clifton South Beach Hotel re-opened as a leader in its category. Not only were they the first LEED certified building in Miami Beach, they also achieved the remarkable accreditation of being the first LEED Gold Hotel in the State of Florida, and as a result have set the bar for other hotels in the area to strive for. The Clifton Hotel falls under the Cambean Hospitality Group, an earth conscious hotel group that encourages and educates its patrons to be aware of sustainability.
From the time you walk into the room you are greeted with warm inviting music and are enveloped in nature from local photo prints of the Florida Everglades. Some things are apparent that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill hotel. There are LED lights through out as well as sustainable bamboo furnishings, but only a keen eye can notice the littlest touches that really show that this hotel has some real environmental heart. Small touches like paraban free shampoo and conditioner. Paraban being that plastic based material that can be toxic, and a water heating system that goes through heat recovery units in the air conditioning system to heat all the water on the property.
The Clifton room directory highlights this and more. “If we are going to save the planet for our kids we need to make every effort, even small efforts.” Said Brian Schienblum President of Cambean Hospitality Group. “We are striving to be the most environmental hotel in the country and currently have a carbon neutral operation. “
The Clifton is not only trying to educate its patrons but encourage other hospitality groups to jump on board the sustainability wagon. It currently saves 30 percent more water and 40 percent more energy compared to similar hotels in its category. Scheinblum goes on to say, “We paid off our renovation costs for the retrofitting of electricity and water saving materials in no time. We are now saving money compared to what we would have spent without the retrofitting.”
If you don’t go to the hotel for its incredible sustainable efforts check it out for its amazing location. It’s nestled just one block from the beach and centrally located to many shops, nightclubs, and restaurants.
