A San Diego County barracks dedicated to wounded Marines and sailors is the “greenest” building in the Navy Department, after receiving the platinum certification under U.S. Green Building Council guidelines.
Camp Pendleton, where the new barracks is located, held a dedication ceremony Thursday.
The $24 million project, completed in March 2010, is the first Department of the Navy building to achieve the highest status under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, standards, base officials said.
It features 100 semi-private suites for wounded service members.
The building is expected to achieve energy savings of 38 percent, a 37 percent reduction in water use indoors and 66 percent water savings in its outdoor landscaping. More than 20 percent of building materials are made from recycled material.
Nearly all spaces where people live get natural daylight and have views of the outdoors, which is intended to increase the comfort and overall well-being of residents — many of whom are recovering from wounds received on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Barnhart Balfour Beatty of San Diego was the general contractor on the project. It was designed by Cass, Sowatsky, Chapman & Associates of San Diego.
