Today marks Day One of the U.S. Green Chamber’s Locavore Challenge!
In preparation for this month’s event, I emptied out my refrigerator of all non-local food by enlisting the help of friends and family. I never realized that this would include all condiments, dressings, and cooking oil! After writing down a list of foods that make up the base of my diet, i.e. yogurt, bread, fruit, and eggs, I set off on a trip to the Hillcrest Whole Foods. I was able to find some local beers and wine, a top priority I assure you, as well as local fruits and veggies. Finding local yogurt has proven to be more difficult than I thought but I will try to hunt down some Hollandia products, a dairy producer based in San Diego. The one thing I may have a hard time sticking to is my milk-substitute, as I am lactose-intolerant, but I am on the hunt for some local soy or almond producers.
At the Farmer’s Market in Hillcrest, I picked up some delectable baked goods from Charlie’s Best Bread as well as my weekly supply of sandwich bread, yet another main staple of mine. The selection of seasonal and local produce was fantastic and I stocked up on these as well. So far, it seems this challenge will not be as difficult as I first thought and I hope to get healthier in the process. My awareness of where my food comes from has already expanded and I am excited to learn more about local San Diego food and farms.
Thankfully, there is a Farmer’s Market everyday in San Diego and they are all open until 5pm on weekdays and 2pm on the weekend. Next week I am excited to see what I can come up with for 4th of July!
